Every Ontario worker needs to know: the gig economy is coming for your job.

In December 2021, Doug Ford’s hand-picked Ontario Workforce Recovery Advisory Committee made a series of recommendations that opens the door to the “gigification” of the entire economy: making it easier for employers to misclassify workers as “independent contractors” and exclude them from Ontario’s minimum labour standards.

But gig workers are already fighting back, and we need the rest of the labour movement to join them. All our jobs are at risk, unless we stand up for decent work for every single one of us.

Join us on January 26 @ 7PM for a panel discussion on building the fight-back.

Speakers:

  • Veena Dubal, Professor at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law
    • Veena Dubal is part of the movement to regulate gig economy giants in the United States. She will share lessons from the fight against Uber’s Prop 22 in California and how it affects decent work struggles. Her research focuses on the intersection of law, technology, and precarious work.
  • Patty Coates, President, Ontario Federation of Labour
  • Jennifer Scott, President Gig Workers United
  • Sarom Rho, Organizer, Migrant Workers’ Alliance for Change & Migrant Students United
  • Joshua Mandryk, labour lawyer at Goldblatt Partners and counsel to the OFL in the OWRAC consultations
