A first day of strike action in daycares across Quebec will take place next week.

After general meetings in several regions in recent weeks, the CSN said Thursday that is 11,000 members have adopted a 10-day strike mandate, the first day of which is to take place on Friday, Sept. 24.

In a statement issued Wednesday night, the CSN-affiliated Fédération de la santé et des services sociaux (FSSS-CSN) announced 2,500 members employed in Montreal and Laval daycares had voted in favour of 10 strike days to be used “at an opportune moment, probably in the coming weeks.”

According to the FSSS-CSN, the strike mandate was endorsed by a “strong majority” of the membership, although vote results were not provided.

The union confirmed Tuesday that workers in Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec had also voted for 10 strike days. Mandates in Quebec City and the Chaudière-Appalaches region had been obtained at the beginning of the month.

Thus far, 11,000 members are covered by the strike mandates.

The daycare workers have been without a contract for 18 months. They are seeking salary increases and resources to provide services for special needs children.

Workers at the centres earn $19 an hour to start and that rate can rise after 10 years to $25 an hour.

The union is seeking an average pay hike of $4 an hour for the first year of a collective agreement as well as an annual pay increase of one per cent, indexed to inflation.
