Errol Black Chair Brunch 2023

Join us in-person for our Annual EBC Fundraising Brunch 2023!

"Reconciliation in an age of austerity and inflation"

Each year, in honour of the work of Errol Black,  we gather with amazing people in our community, visit, eat a lovely brunch but also to celebrate individuals in our midst who have done amazing work.   In 2012 we held our first Errol Black Chair Fundraising Brunch.

Now 11 years later, we are honouring the work of Leslie Spillett.

Leslie Spillett, Giizhigoweyaabbikkew, Mukwa Doodem, she/her/Iskwew, is a Cree and Métis community kohkum and organizer who has been involved in many grassroots social justice movements over several decades. Leslie was an organizer for the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union for over a decade and, during that time, worked to eliminate the exploitative piecework system by negotiating livable base hourly wages, equal pay for equal work, and paid overtime.

Spillett has contributed to the Indigenous sovereignty and equity within Manitoba’s Indigenous NGOs and co-founded Mother of Red Nations Women’s Council and Ka Ni Kanichihk in 2000. Both organizations were early leaders to support families of MMIWG2S and to advocate for systemic changes within Canada’s colonial institutions including health, education, justice and child welfare.

Currently Leslie works with Ongomiizwin Indigenous Institute of Health and Healing, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences and supports Indigenous students, faculty and staff within the five faculties of health and Mino Pimatisiwin Sexual Health Healing Lodge. She serves on the board/council of the Manitoba Harm Reduction Network, National Consortium for Indigenous Medical Education, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls 2SLGBTQQIA+ Manitoba Advisory Committee, and Iskwewak Awetowak Nipocawin: Indigenous Women Leading Knowledge. Leslie has been a guest of Treaty 1 since 1977 and has raised her family in Winnipeg.

Our Keynote speaker is Niigaan Sinclair. Niigaan is Anishinaabe (St. Peter’s/Little Peguis) and a professor at the University of Manitoba, where he holds the Faculty of Arts Professorship in Indigenous Knowledge and Aesthetics in the Department of Indigenous Studies. Niigaan is also an award-winning writer, editor and activist who was recently named to the “Power List” by Maclean’smagazine as one of the most influential individuals in Canada. In 2018, he won Canadian columnist of the year at the National Newspaper Awards for his bi-weekly columns in The Winnipeg Free Press and is a featured member of the Friday "Power Panel" on CBC's Power & Politics. A former secondary school teacher, he won the 2019 Peace Educator of the Year from the Peace and Justice Studies Association based at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.

The Manitoba office of the CCPA, established the Errol Black Chair in Labour Issues. This full-time labour research position as a means of honouring Errol’s many contributions to the labour movement and to the CCPA. It honours Errol in a way that carries on the work that has for decades been his passion: doing the highly skilled research and writing that promotes to trade union members and to the general public the many virtues of a healthy trade union movement. Niall Harney holds the position of the Errol Black Chair at the CCPA.
